Benefits to a Dog Shelter Kennel for Working DogsHow to Ensure Your Working Dog is Happy and Healthy

When it comes to keeping your shelter dog’s kennel behavior up, one main component that influences it is the type of shelter they have. If you leave your working dog in a small dog shelter that is too cramped, they will most likely be negatively affected. They may end up not working to their full potential, which is a major issue.

There are plenty of options when it comes to finding a shelter that works best for you. In this post, we will cover a variety of options, complete with advantages, disadvantages, and types of configurations. After reading, you will have a much better understanding of dog shelters.

Shelter Kennel Behavior

There are a variety of ways to ensure a dog’s health and happiness. Before comparing dog shelters or kennels, you’ll need to consider the following factors:

    • Determine the best size:  Measure your dog’s height, body width, and length. All you have to do is add 9 inches to your dog’s height, 18 inches to your dog’s length, and 12 inches to your dog’s width. This will give you a set of measurements that you can use to determine the best size kennel for your dog.
    • Envision where to place the kennel: When placing shelter outside, is your dog going to be in full sun all day? Maybe you should consider a shady spot in the yard. What about your neighbors? Consider how having a kennel near their home would impact them. How about the foundation? Will your dog sit on gravel or concrete?
    • Temperature and precipitation considerations: Make sure the shelter you invest in has a leak proof roof. The kennel should be very well insulated and ventilated.

Indoor or Outdoor Kennels — You Decide!

Whatever building you decide to purchase, make sure that it is appropriate for the setting you have chosen. Here are some key differences to consider:

Indoor kennels are best for:

  • Puppies that are still in the potty training stages.
  • Destructive dogs that can ruin the house when the owner is gone.
  • Dogs with anxiety and phobias.

Outdoor kennels are best for:

  • Big breeds
  • Working dogs
  • Dogs that prefer the outdoors
  • Dogs that use the bathroom more frequently than others

Other Information About Kennel Differences

In kennels, there are side-to-side options and front-to-back options. We recommend the front-to-back option simply because front-to-back kennels have room for the dog to run to the back of the kennel when cleaned. Consider your dog’s age, and whether or not they get cold or hot easily. This can contribute to your decision greatly, as you will need a kennel that can accommodate the differences.

Kennels can also be customized, especially if you want to add extra rooms or gates. Regardless of the customization, make sure it fits the needs of your dog. Many companies, such as Dakota Storage Buildings, can maximize the benefits of your kennel and utilize your space in great ways!
