Essentials for Your She Shed

A she shed can be anything you want it to be — let your imagination guide you.

She sheds are a thing; everyone knows that now. It’s not all about the man caves anymore.

With a page taken right out of Virginia Woolf's essay, "A Room of One's Own," a she shed can be anything you want and need it to be, whether it fits with others' preconceptions or starkly challenges them.

The key is to take ownership of your she shed from day one. This is meant to be your space — whether it’s the corner of the porch, a whole spacious room, or even a standalone structure away from your main living area.

Once you have those details sorted out, it’s time to outfit your she shed with all the essentials. Think style, storage, and safety.

She Shed Outside Decor

Before you begin decorating the interior of your she shed, be sure to design the exterior to fit your identity and make it feel welcoming. Whether that’s a welcome mat, some homey outdoor furniture, or some cheerful plants, designing the exterior can help you to truly enjoy your own space.

Oxygenate, refresh, and restore with greenery.

If you enjoy flowers and plants, consider adding a few or even starting a small porch or windy box garden with seedlings or cuttings. Landscaping doesn't have to be overwhelming. Keep it simple but attractive. Be sure to stash a few vases in your she shed so that you can bring in some freshly cut flowers or herbs to enjoy.

Wave to the backyard birds.

A birdbath near a window or door adds a restful touch and refreshes your backyard birds during the hotter months.

Light it up for safety.

Depending on the height and size of your space, lighting could be an issue. That’s where string lighting can come into play. String lights come in all lengths, sizes, shapes, and colors. Some are weatherized for outdoor use while others are perfect to set up indoors. If you don't have access to an electrical outlet, look for the battery-powered string light sets or try out a set of solar string lights. As you hang your lights, keep safety in mind.

Use solar torches or spotlights on the walkway and at the entrance for your safety and the safety of your guests.

She sheds can make great workspaces if you have a full-time remote gig or side hustle, but it can also be a retreat or getaway in which the sole purpose is to provide you sanctuary from the daily grind.

First rule: make it yours.

Even if you plan to invite guests to visit your she shed, don't decorate with them in mind. This is your retreat. Anyone you choose to invite inside should be someone with whom you can be the "real you” — a friend who will enjoy the space with you and respect it as yours.

Make your "I've always wanted that" list.

Before you start to outfit your she shed with interior decor, stop and ponder your list of "I've always wanted one of those." Is it an antique writing desk? A fix-it toolkit of your very own? A wall dedicated to your photography? A set of plush pillows with a matching cozy throw?

Write it down, then get down to the business of finding these things and filling your she shed with them.

DIY decor with a thrift vibe.

A she shed is also a great place to try out those awesome DIY decor ideas.

Repurpose gently used home furnishings in your favorite colors. Think about creatively reusing old bins, chests, or boxes for extra storage.

Go thrifting to find unique doorknobs, fan pulls, lampshade covers, and vintage art — just see where your creative muses lead you.

Have you ever wanted a barn door, but you don't have a barn? Problem solved! Take out that swinging door and attach a sliding barn door in its place.

Refreshments make the shed.

In all the excitement, don't forget refreshments. A mini-kitchenette can take care of all your basic needs whether you are entertaining a crowd or a party of one.

Do you love to just sit quietly in the morning, sipping your coffee? A single-cup brewer and a big mug will do the trick. Is evening your favorite time of day to curl up with a good book and a glass of your favorite beverage? Keep fresh brewed sweet tea or lemonade in your mini-fridge. Delish!

Ambiance, thy name is she shed.

Consider what you find most relaxing. Is it candles, music, or a bubbling fish tank? Put your creativity on point to set the mood and create the perfect ambiance.

As you create your she shed, remember this is the perfect place for you to express everything you love most about YOU and your life.
